Obituary for David Elsworth Dawson

David Elsworth Dawson, 96, of Allendale, South Carolina, passed away on February 11th at Veterans Victory House nursing home in Walterboro, South Carolina.

David was born in Tampa, Florida, the son of Emmett James and Martha Lenora (Jones) Dawson. Upon graduating from Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia, he joined the Navy at the beginning of World War II and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, where he met his future wife, Olga Tetar. They were married for 66 years before her passing in 2012.If one were to search for one phrase to describe David, it would be Faithful Servant.  David served as both Deacon and Sunday School teacher for decades as a member of First Baptist Church in Allendale, and travelled throughout the Low Country preaching and spreading the message as a member of the Gideons.

In later years when Olga developed Alzheimer's, he insisted on caring for her at home, at the expense of his own health, as long as he could before finally making the painful decision that led to her moving to Veterans Victory House nursing home in Walterboro. After that, he made the 100 mile round trip each day to be with her.

David was also a 32° Mason, and a Past Grand Master of Lodge #109 in Allendale, as well as a Deputy District Director.

He was predeceased by brothers Emmett Dawson Jr and Paul Dewey Dawson, and sisters Marceline June Carter and Betty Dawson Stanton.

He is survived by his sister Mina Lenora Dawson Bousquet and by his son David Dawson Jr. and his wife Kim.

Owing to Covid restrictions, no public services are planned at this time, although a memorial service may be held at a later date.

Interment will be in Swallow Savannah Cemetery.

Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water, Street, Allendale, SC 29810
