Obituary for Laura Jennings Cone

Sycamore, SC
Laura Jennings Cone, 103, died at her home in Sycamore on January 30. Laura was born to the late J. Alex Jennings and Alma Kirkland Jennings on May 19, 1917, in the Colston Community of Bamberg County. On June 3, 1939, she married the late George Horace Cone of Sycamore, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Born at home very premature, weighing about three pounds and small enough to fit in the palm of her father’s hand, Laura was not expected to make it out of infancy. But her parents constantly kept her by the warm kitchen hearth long before incubators. The devastating Spanish flu pandemic followed the next year. Surviving that, she started driving herself and other Colston children to school in Bamberg when she was only 13 in a Ford Model A Touring Car. In the 1930’s upon graduating from Bamberg High School, she worked in the Engrossing Department of the Legislature at the State House in Columbia for several years. In the 1940’s, she became the first female John Deere farm implement and tractor salesperson in the nation and became an expert on all things John Deere while also serving as bookkeeper and manager of Jennings Farm Supply in Ehrhardt into the 1960’s. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, she served as the Allendale County Auditor. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, she served as her son’s “Girl Friday” at Carolina Eastern and Cone Farms in Sycamore where her lifelong body of farming knowledge was greatly admired and appreciated by all area farmers.

Throughout the decades, she was also actively involved in Sycamore Baptist Church, the Janie Bowers Circle, Allendale County Business and Professional Women, the Allendale County Board of Social Services and Office on Aging, the Lower Savannah Council of Governments, and other county and state community and political associations.

Laura was also predeceased by her beloved son, Donald K. “Kenny” Cone and daughter-in-law Delaine Cone of Allendale; her brother, Jim Jennings and his wife Lee of North Charleston; nephews Randy Jennings of Moncks Corner and Ted Cone of Sycamore; her best friend Pearle Googe of Fairfax; and a host of great nieces and nephews.

She leaves behind her grandsons Alex Cone (Michael Duncan) of Edisto Beach and Andy Cone (Melissa) and their sons Justin Joiner and Braden Joiner of Graniteville; daughter-in-law Nelia Cone of Chapin; nephews Jerry Cone of Sycamore and Wyndy Jennings (Lisa) of Pinopolis; niece Lynn Jennings (Dunkirt, MD.); and a host of great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 2, at 2:00 at the Fairfax Cemetery, where the family will receive visitors after the service. The family kindly requests that masks be worn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sycamore Baptist Church or the Rivers Bridge Confederate Memorial Association.

Keith Smith Funeral Service, 128 Water Street, Allendale, SC.
